About Boyne Coast and Estuary Special Area of Conservation

The Boyne Coast and Estuary Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is located along the eastern shore of the Irish Sea in County Meath, Ireland. This protected area encompasses the tidal estuary of the River Boyne, extensive intertidal mudflats, saltmarshes, sand dunes, and coastal marshlands. These habitats provide critical breeding and feeding grounds for a variety of important species including migratory birds, marine fish, and rare plants. The mix of freshwater from the river and saline water from the sea creates a dynamic environment supporting diverse ecological communities. Historically, the Boyne Estuary has been an area of human settlement and activity since ancient times, but its natural features remain largely intact. The area also holds archaeological significance with nearby sites dating back to Neolithic times. Outdoor recreation visitors primarily enjoy birdwatching, walking along coastal trails, and peaceful nature observation. The estuarine mudflats and saltmarshes are particularly noted for supporting internationally significant populations of light-bellied brent geese, waders, and wildfowl. Dune systems near Laytown and Mornington provide habitat for important plant species and add to the scenic coastal experience. Conserving this habitat is critical to maintain Ireland’s biodiversity and the ecological integrity of the Irish Sea coastline. The Boyne Coast and Estuary SAC offers tranquility, natural beauty, and excellent opportunities for low-impact wildlife and nature-based activities appealing to both casual visitors and dedicated naturalists.
